San Lorenzo al Mare (San Loénso in Ligurian) is an Italian municipality of 1,378 inhabitants in the province of Imperia in Liguria. The municipality is a small coastal village of the Riviera di Ponente which, with an area of just over one square kilometer, is the smallest municipality in the province of Imperia and the entire region. It is about 5 km from Imperia and is located centrally for excursions. The layout of San Lorenzo al Mare, seen from above, almost resembles that of an anchor, with two distinct nuclei that extend between the hilly and coastal areas. This ancient settlement dates back to the Middle Ages, precisely to the twelfth century, when it was known as Aqua Sancti Laurenti. Since then, this picturesque village has experienced considerable development, offering a wide range of attractions. Here visitors can immerse themselves in history, art, and culture, as well as engage in various recreational activities, both intellectual and fun or relaxing, always accompanied by the enchanting beauty of the landscape that this hidden gem offers its guests.

Church

The main beach of San Lorenzo al Mare is located near the old village and is a stretch of fine sandy beach that alternates between equipped areas and free ones; easy access, shallow waters in the first meters from the shore, and available amenities make it a beach suitable for families with children.

Church of Santa Maria Maddalena: According to legend, the saint left the Holy Land aboard a raft and during her journey to Marseille, she stopped in San Lorenzo al Mare. The origins of the church are uncertain but probably date back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries; its current appearance is due to later modifications in late Baroque style.

San Lorenzo al Mare is the starting point of one of the most famous and beloved cycle paths in Liguria: the Coastal Park West Cycle Path.

It's a 30 km path that follows the route of the former Imperia-Ospedaletti railway, which was part of the Genoa-Ventimiglia railway (now moved further up). Designed for bicycles, it can also be walked or skated on. The extension from Imperia Borgo Prino to Imperia Station is currently under construction.

Eventi

With its narrow cobblestone streets and picturesque pastel-colored houses, the historic center of San Lorenzo al Mare retains its medieval charm. Walking through its streets is like taking a journey back in time.

Here on the Riviera dei Fiori, there's a unique opportunity: you can participate in Whale Watching. It's an extraordinary experience that allows you to sail into the heart of the "Sanctuary of Cetaceans," dedicated to the study and observation of eight different species of these magnificent animals that inhabit the protected waters between Italy, France, and the Principality of Monaco. This part of the Mediterranean is exceptionally rich in marine life, especially due to the presence of numerous populations of cetaceans.

Throughout the year, it's easy to encounter various artistic events that bring the streets of the village to life, both of a religious nature and for pure entertainment. On these occasions, you'll have the opportunity to savor delicious local specialties while enjoying good music. If you find yourself in San Lorenzo al Mare during the summer, you absolutely must not miss the feast of Santa Maria Maddalena, celebrated every July 22nd, and the feast of the patron saint San Lorenzo, famous for being the night of shooting stars, on August 10th.
